Subject: Automatic transmission final drive gear oil leak.
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I have a 91 2.1 automatic. It has a gear oil leak as best I can tell from the bell housing/torque converter area. The only thing that I’m aware of in there is the torque converter oil seal that seals out AFT. I’m not aware of any thing that seals out the final drive gear oil other than the drive flange, governor, and the seals between the transmission and final drive. The transmission oil is fine. The final drive is down as best I can tell with my finger about ½ inch in the 1,225 mile drive from PA to FL. It is not wet other than wicking up around the drive flanges. No sign of them slinging oil. Only wet and dripping from the bottom of the bell housing and blown back to the bottom of the engine. The torque converter itself is dry.

Anyone have any ideas what I’m looking at back there. Other than taking the transaxle down, how difficult a fix is this?

Thanks, BobC
