The dirt concept is mentioned in the service manual for the Caterpillar engine in my motor home. As for the pump priming, the oil pump does a lousy job pumping air. Worse, it needs the oil film between the gear teeth and housing for it to even work. If the pump empties it will prime faster if there is no restriction on the output side allowing to more easily pull some air and oil into the suction pipe and body. Once this occurs the filter will fill very fast. If you do in fact do not have oil pressure remove the filter and somehow push some oil into the other hole in the filter-oil cooler mount. This will get the pump gears wetted. You can also quickly start and stop the engine with the filter off to ensure the pump is pumping. It is rare but you wouldn't be the first to have one of these pumps actually fail. Shaft going loose inside of the gear or the drive tab wearing-breaking off have happened.

Dennis, As always, I read each and every one of your posts, as they are a wealth of information, both practical and theoretical. Up until now, I have always pre-filled the oil filter, because that's how my dad taught me. Your comment about introducing unfiltered oil makes perfect sense. Can you please help me understand how pre-filling the filter makes it harder for the oil pump to prime? Kind regards, Mike M
