 The situation here in San Diego is a little different than a place like....say, Seattle.  We've got WAVES here...big ones sometimes.  Plenty of salty mist from those waves; plenty of strong onshore winds too.  I'm only 1 mile from the ocean.  Things like doorknobs and aluminum window frames and Vanagon electrical contacts have a bigger challenge than most places inland.  And....we don't get much freshwater rinsing (rain) to take that stuff out of the local atmosphere.
