When I first got my 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Campmobile with original 2.1 engine, 135K miles at the time in 2009, it behaved exactly the same way, also putting us at risk when entering intersections or trying to merge onto a highway. Proper plugs, distributor parts, timing (someone had tampered), fuel delivery -- standard proper tune up so to speak, and everything was good. It was running rich before those things were taken care of. That wasn't the only thing that had not been properly maintained about it, but that was what took care of the stalling problem. It now has 185K miles, and by keeping everything proper, it has never exhibited those symptoms again. I did put in a new fuel tank (later), and of course new fuel filter and fuel lines, but those things didn't cause the stalling. In fact, the new fuel lines were before the other things, just because I was trying to take care of safety first. The new tank was because someone had used the bracing for the tank as a lift point, mistaking them for frame members, and put a giant dent in the tank bottom.
