I didn't have those problems with my vanagon.com board. The board fits as it should, no shims needed. At first I used big cable ties to hold the board in place as per instructions but quit because it is a hassle and haven't found any need for such so I didn't replace the ties and nothing has fallen out. Been using the setup for over a year and don't car what color my lights are as long as they work. The instrument lights are a bit weak for my taste but as I said for the price and the fact that everything works I am fine with the setup.
