The special sauce is water, ammonia, and hydrogen at around 400 psi, plus an anticorrosive powder. The water/ammonia mixture boils in a boiler, discharging ammonia gas which travels up to the upper condenser fins to begin the cooling cycle.

The boiler gets its heat from the flame or from either of two electric heating elements -- if any one of the three cools the fridge, that says the cooling unit is working correctly and the problem is in a faulty heat source.
