Great sound clip -- reminds me of the sound of my green and mighty 1974 Volvo 245 station wagon (a.k.a. The Zuke) sounded when a valve stem broke and jammed and its pushrod bent. (Not really sure of the order of things.) In my case, however, the clacking sound was very high energy and I couldn't tolerate listening to it for more than a few seconds each of the times I started the engine to try to troubleshoot. I can't tell from the recording how harsh that "clack" sound is.

Before proceeding with Dennis' recommended valve cover removal, you can try putting your hand on the valve covers while it is operating. You may find a difference in one side that really convinces you about which way to go first - ?

In my case, I believe the complete repair was about $100 (Vancouver Island Dollars).

hope this helps, gabby
