I can vouch for the late model A/C. Our '87 came with a complete system that only blew hot. After getting an outrageous quote to fix it I figured there was nothing to lose by trying a cheapo R134a conversion so bought one from the FLAPS. It works but I have to recharge annually. 

It really deserves a genuine repair but this will do for now, blowing as cold as we need it to do. The Samba posse frowns on such half-assery but this works for me.
