Hi All  Dave B. here.  Back 5 days ago from an11K Grand Circle of NP's, and anything else close (all the way to Mesa AZ), Rocky Mountains, Black Hills, Upper Peninsula and home (MA) through Elgin, IL and upstate NY.  More info later.  The wife and I are in the middle of getting the yard and house ready for daughter's baby shower after 3 months away. Our thoughts and hopes go out to those travelers in Atlanta.  We only had a couple of breakdowns I handled with tools, bits and pieces, and friends (Thanks Skip).  I had what I thought was a tranny problem before leaving in May.  Dennis Haynes told me I needed (and was right) suspension work instead. Nevertheless, I found out more than I already knew about VW transaxels.   If those folks in Atlanta can find a shop (VanAlert trusted shops??), those transaxels are not rocket science.  Tricky, but not rocket science.  They may be better off fixing their current trans, which might be original, not high mileage, otherwise in good shape, etc., as opposed to getting a tranny that may have been rebuilt from a crappy core.  Think alternators.  Having just come back from an epic trip with a 33 year old vehicle, we have an idea of their pain.  Good Luck, don't let despair get in the way.  Their are other Vanagon people there who would be more than happy to help.  Right Folks?! Dave B.
