We called that the sediment bowl, typically built into the fuel pump if I'm
remembering aright.  First time I met a metal one that had to be removed to
check it I felt cheated.

But in a modern injector engine, any dirt ending up in that bowl would
indicate that the fuel filter had burst or some such, and injector trouble
would be not long behind.

ps -- ah, I remember about the metal bowl.  USAA made us replace the glass
one on Scamp with metal as a condition of insurance.  She had a
bronze-cased "filter" that was more of a strainer, and then the sediment
bowl.
