Simplicity (mTDI), fuel mileage - 25-35 depending on the tuning and speeds, gobs of torque in the lower rpm range where it's needed most, ability to crawl over objects and rough roads without slipping the clutch, biofuels work great. Gee, let's see...fully loaded mTDI Syncro pulled a 2500-lb trailer across the country when I moved west, never shifted out of 4th on most hills or dropped below 60 mph. Still got 22mpg as a minimum. The van then went on to do 21 months through Latin America with new owners, netting 26-30 mpg and having no problem even at 15K feet in Bolivia. No comparison to the gutless torque of the 'favorite' Japanese engine of today or the Ford that so many installed. Just like anything else in life, if ya don't know what yer doin', let a pro do it correctly - most of the bad rap diesel conversions get is from people installing them w/o knowing enough about doing one correctly.
