Agreed. I think how the van is driven can be the bigger factor. And the temptation to drive it harder is there even with a small HP increase. My first conversion to Jetta engine was done on an air cooled Vanagon with tired engine. I drove that van differently, right away. Same for the '88 I converted to the same engine. I rebuilt that engine. It has even better acceleration. The HP increase from the stock 2.1 is not huge but since the rebuilt engine allows it, (so far, LOL), at times I shift at higher RPM than I would with the 2.1 WBX.
