I've had a very positive experience with Gmail's SPAM filtering, but then again I've been using it since the beginning, so my training data is large. Every now and then I get a false positive, but by setting the sort field to sender in the SPAM folder, those false positives jump right out.

If you would like to run Gmail without their anti-SPAM, I suspect this old tip will still work:
