As you "tap" the pin in (not much force is needed), the loose collar gets pushed into hole along with pin; that loose collar is what keeps the pin in place. The pin can be "tapped" into place all the way; the step on the outboard end of pin stops up against the hole in caliper. You'll hear and feel a change as pin stops moving. Neil.
