Subject: Add tie wraps to strain relieve connections to Starter Motor

While this is still fresh on my mind, I want to add advice to securely add nylon zip-ties to power cable to Starter Motor.

Here's the story:  I had original VW starter motor in my 85 Vanagon with a 1.9 wasserboxer.  Starter motor, decades ago, pooped out near Flagstaff, cost me a night in a motel.  Next day, all magically healed the next morning (probably due to cooled engine).  I replaced that VW starter motor with another when I got back to San Diego.  All good for several decades.  But, then I did the Subie 2.2 conversion.  With that crummy IMI starter motor.  So...it was out and in, and out and in.  I figure I (my mechanics) have moved those wires around about 10 times!  What does this mean?  Fatigue.  On that critical Ring Terminal connection.  About a 50 cent part.  Cost me over $500 for a flatbed tow from near Yuma back to my mechanic in El Cajon, CA. My mechanic figured it all out in like 5 minutes.  Replaced the Ring Terminal.  I still have it pasted on my cork bulletin board.  As a reminder.

No matter how swell the starter motor is, all of it is no good with a broken connection.  All those times of dis-connecting and re-connecting definitely took their toll on a very critical connection.  All it took was one minor bump in the road to break it.  Moral of the story?  Replace old crimp Ring Terminals with new ones...and add solid nylon tie-wraps so things don't vibrate and fail.  Just saying. Fires up every time!

The TDI starter has almost twice the cranking power plus faster speed. On the same Amazon link the IMI (or copies of) shows up, which again is what made me build the first prototype adaptor. I like how my 112i WBX springs to life in less than a revolution, almost every time. Karl
