Randy, FWIW, about 12 years ago on a road trip I blew out a front wheel bearing on my 85 Vanagon; took out the spindle as well.  From a motel with internet and the RoadHaus list, I found Precision Motor Car Ltd.  132 NE Grand Ave., 503-232-7669.  Took my first Ride of Shame.  But hey, those guys fixed me up and importantly....they asked me a LOT of questions before proceeding.  Like how long I was going to own my van (I said forever).  They carefully advised me about the importance of not only fixing the right side, but also to address the left side, brake wise.  Things have to balance.  Another cool thing, they got me right in...and...were able to procure rare spindle from a scrap yard to do the fix.  It was a fun day of exploring Portland, they fixed my van for what I thought was a very reasonable cost, got to a campground up the Columbia River a few hours later.  The repair still holds to this day.

These guys are good...but that was 12 years ago.  So take it for what it's worth.  Yes, Vanagons are abundant in the NorthWest, and so are shops.  Good luck. Rich San Diego

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a honest, reasonably priced Vanagon mechanic in the Portland Oregon area.  I have a 1982 and unfortunately my mechanical ability is limited.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated!
