On my '88, due to various factors, a fair amount of water got into my non stock air cleaner with Vanagon "snorkel". Like 1.5 cups worth poured out of the air cleaner.

Do all model Vanagons have a potential drain hole at the sheet metal at bottom of that pillar? IIRC, theres a plug at the centre of the sheet metal at bottom.

On the Vanagon intake that runs up the pillar, the bottom elbow has a dip with a hole in it. VW anticipated water possibly getting into the snorkel?

I'd suggest that if the space forward of the tail light was used for storage, using it for tools or *some* parts may not be ideal. Imagine having to pull over and quickly find that fuel bypass pump tool or coolant hose flow cut off clamps if they're stored in that space.

Not an original idea but speaking of space, I'd long thought that keeping a "top ten" of tools at the rear face of the Westy cabinet would be pretty ideal.

Neil.
