As a thought a professional mechanic should be knowledgeable of the vehicles in their care and when needed have the resources to look things up. On occasion I also work on vehicles I'm not familiar with and when needed I reach out to resources such as AllData or get manuals as needed. For the Vanagon AllData Do it yourself is a great resource but nothing beats the Bentley Manual.

For the idle control system it is a fairly simple set up and the Bentley has the test procedure for diagnosing and setting it up. Current and duty cycle are the key measurements. From experience the valve rarely fails. It also should not have any gook or debris inside. That is also a sign of an engine problem. The controller fails in a few different modes. Usually idle troubles are the result of something outside of the idle control system or is indicating an engine performance issue. For the controllers there are no new units available and most likely a GoWesty refurb is an only choice. As they are a bit costly you want to ensure it is really needed.

Tell us what the symptoms are and maybe we can be more helpful.

Dennis

Hello Gentlemen,

After all these years following this impressive group, I am submitting my first mechanical question.

My awesome mechanic recently replaced my idle air control valve, but noticed the idle is still not performing correctly.

He wants to install an idle stabilizer control unit, but wants to know more specific placement than: ‘right side of engine’

So how/ where do you install it?

Hope everyone is holding up!!
