Alistair,
Have you disconnected and reconnected the ECU? I have encountered a crank no start situation in wet weather that was fixed by doing that although temporarily. Happened a few times before I cleaned the pins and that seems to have fixed the problem.
I have a 1989 Westfalia with A/T.
