I still do not understand....trying to go back to 1985....how does one selectively NOT incorporate solder into a joint during the wave-solder process?  And....WHY would you want to do that?  It seems, you are getting strength and integrity for free. Of course...logic behind all of this for sure, but I just don't see it.  Maybe something about vibration on the highway. No jokes please about flux capacitor....I'm really trying to understand this engineering/manufacturing decision.

There are at least 12 on that first image, which is the upside down of Alistair's.  A matching one from the other side would be lovely. :)
