David, I just want to be sure...my email says 470R for the resistor.  I am assuming this is 470 Ohms, I guess like a 1/4 Watt resistor (dang, I have not even said that phrase in 40 years!  I guess what you mean is super small size wise).  And like you said, a little extra if too bright. 470R ought to be safe.  All the panel LEDs use 470R.  Beyond that, increase resistance to make it dimmer.

I know 5V ones exist because I've bought some.  Not widely available though.  Ah!  This outfit has 3mm diffused yellow 12V ones at $1.40 for five.  Comes to $5.35 with shipping. http://www.led-switch.com/12%20volt%20LED.htm

REmember though you may need additional resistance to tone it down.
