You have beacoup du options Alistair!

It seems either swap would be more ideal with use of an adaptor plate and likely one of Karl Mullendores starter adaptors.

Have no fear! If *I* can rebuild an engine (15K miles, so far so good) I'd suggest most handy DIY types can. Of note, I regret not having the head re-valved on my ABA rebuild; it only saw new valve seals (by machine shop). But, I understand. If it was me on a budget, I'd just open up the 2.1 then if journals et al are in spec, do a bearing, ring, hone job and call it done. But if the hoses need replacement, might be a ripe time to convert.

Just IMO but even the ABA Motronic wiring harness can be "old". I was surprised at just how much corroded wire I saw in mine on my last ABA swap. I'd suggest the same is potentially true for a Subara harness. If I didn't have time, minor proclivity towards electrical, Id go with the newest low mile platform I could.

i.e. I'd equate a failed solder joint to something like an intermittently failing wire or connector.
