 Same with me...only I just pivoted my head around.  Said to self, "Hey, there is something wonky here.  Amber light with an LED should be more or less equal in all directions as opposed to a yellow light pipe/lens and an incandescent bulb situation."
Hey, this will kinda be a fun one!  Utilizing 2020 technology as opposed to 1985 technology.  BTW David, for sort of a standard small amber LED, what is the appropriate resistor?  Even better...I'm sure there are multiple sources for the proper sized LED, the proper color, the proper voltage, and includes the proper resistor to make it all work.  Then it becomes mostly plug and play...with a little Dremel surgery on the actual switch to get it all enclosed and wired up and attached inside Vanagon.

I did a slight mod on mine to try to get more light  pointed at the
driver.  Slight success.
