Ok all. I'm trying to get my 82 air cooled Vanagon back on the road again instead of just being my man cave sitting on the side of the house. Problem is I haven't done much more than change oil in the past so my mechanical abilities leave a lot to be desired. I've not asked for mechanical help in the past but my van and I have got to ride together again and due to the recent financial changes, I can't really afford to take it into a shop, so hear goes.....

First issue I'm going after-The ignition key turns but won't start the engine. I thought it might be the ignition switch so I replaced it. Same thing. I can hot wire start the van by bypassing the key/ignition switch. I pulled the ignition switch out and plugged it into the wire harness and turned the ignition switch with a screw driver and it started so I don't think its the ignition switch. It appears that the lock cylinder is turning the ignition switch. I do know that they ignition cylinder was replaced probably less than 500 miles ago. Thoughts?

Thanks all!

Randy Coryell
