The best way to replace the ignition switch contact assembly is to remove the bearing assembly form the steering column. That way you can get to that little securing screw and make sure the switch is properly seated on the actuator. You wouldn't be the first to have the actuator in the lock assembly break or get damaged where it wouldn't operate the switch.

Ok all. I'm trying to get my 82 air cooled Vanagon back on the road again instead of just being my man cave sitting on the side of the house. Problem is I haven't done much more than change oil in the past so my mechanical abilities leave a lot to be desired. I've not asked for mechanical help in the past but my van and I have got to ride together again and due to the recent financial changes, I can't really afford to take it into a shop, so hear goes.....

First issue I'm going after-The ignition key turns but won't start the engine. I thought it might be the ignition switch so I replaced it. Same thing. I can hot wire start the van by bypassing the key/ignition switch. I pulled the ignition switch out and plugged it into the wire harness and turned the ignition switch with a screw driver and it started so I don't think its the ignition switch. It appears that the lock cylinder is turning the ignition switch. I do know that they ignition cylinder was replaced probably less than 500 miles ago. Thoughts?

Thanks all!

Randy Coryell
