That is the normal vin format for a 1980 model year but it was the last year it was used. With serial number 112910 out of 140000 built that year it is nearer the last of the 80 model year production. VW model year production in those days usually began/ended around July. Since the 1980 was the first year of a completely new model the production started earlier but at a low rate as the production line switched over and got up to speed. Mark
