I found them much brighter than OEM bulbs, and good enough to make sure I
don't hit anything backing into my garage!

Dan: Your suggestion would allow about as much lighting as I would ever
need.  However, I would be happy with a more modest improvement and I
hesitate at modifying the van with external lights.  So I've decided
to follow the other recommendations.

Stan: Good idea.  I will add reflective tape to the housing as you
suggested to harvest at least some of the radial light rays.

Jack: How did you find that LED replacement?  I looked through what
seemed like 1,000 choices for something with about 1,000 lumens that
might direct more of the light axially rather than radially.  Every bulb
that I researched  concentrated 70% or more of the light radially.
Then I checked out your recommendation and found that it sent 55% of
its light axially out the rear of the van.  Stan's reflector idea
should capture at least some of the remaining 45%.
