I am a believer of thick oil is better than thin one specially in hot
climate... but here's a story I want to share...
I bought my 1st oil cooler kit from Chris Corkins (Vanistan) around 2010
for my Syncro... I had a discussion with him regarding oil grade to use...
He said 10W40 year round with the oil cooler... I asked why not 20W50
(since I use it all the time)?.. he said using 20W50 defeats the purpose of
the oil cooler, thicker oil flows slower and holds heat longer than thin
one. The oil cooler dissipates heat not only from the oil but also from
general heat of the engine... btw my 2000 ML430 (4.3L V8) use 5W40
synthetic... 162K miles, not using a drop between 7K oil change.
unfortunately I don't remember where's the discussion was saved(or not).. I
have to go back and ask him again.
