I have been doing Vanagon restorations for twenty years.
Before you think of painting, do the job that has to be done before
painting; sanding, priming, sanding, etc.
But most of the guys don't even think of the main thing that has to be done;
the seams. Yes, the seams got to be cut out and filled with seam sealer
nicely. This is done before the painting and after all the sanding,
preparations. To fill in the seam sealer is not very easy to do nicely,
without messing up.
And there is the major seam; the left bottom behind the fridge. Most of the
time it's rotten from the inside, caused by condensations. Need to pull the
kitchen unit out and clean the whole thing there, then paint it with rust
proofing POR 15 or the like. Only then go to the outside and cut the seam
out and put new seam sealer there.
There is about thirty feet of seams to refill.
Not to forget the door steps either. Lots of grinding and de rusting from
the bottom too. Use POR 15 and prime it while it's still a little tacky.
Once it's hard forget it.
Don't neglect the bottom of the van either. Make sure, it's in good shape.
Also, it's good to check the inside of the engine compartment on the left
and right trays. Etc, etc.
And when all the work is done, only then you can put the cherry on the top;
paint. Base and clear.
Then polish it mirror finish.
I don't do all this anymore, but I left someone behind to carry on the high
quality specialized Vanagon restoration for very reasonable price, that you
can't find anywhere. He is close to Seattle.

Hi guys,
That's it, after years of procrastination , I finally decided to repaint
my Vanagon camper.
Its a 1983 air-cool camper . The color is Ivory - L567.
While I should be Okay painting it, I need advice about the paint itself .
Originally , the paint was a glasurit single-stage lacquer but I don't
know if the original paint is still there. From the sending , I can see
a gray primer + ivory coat + clear.
So far , I removed the clear coat, I did not sand to the metal because
the base coat is good for most part. I did sand however to the metal
around rusty area with a marge.
I guess my question is which kind of paint I should buy . I need a good
primer to stick on the previous base coat, 2 base coat and one of two
clear coat.
So far I am leaning toward urethane paint but I want to hear about your
experiences.
I also would like to know where to buy the paint (a place which knows
about Ivory - L567. color). which brand ?. somehow I would like the
primer, base and clear to be from the same manufacture for the sake of
compatibility .
Should I use a filler in the spot where I sand to the metal ?
Any tips is welcome.
Thanks
Chris
