I would definitely agree with Ken. Consulting Forest Service maps and beyond that, personnel, would be an important step in deciding whether to take a trailer on a given road. If there are dispersed camping sites clearly identified with names, that would be more promising. But, I would make inquiries before actually starting down a FS road towing a trailer. Same with BLM. Even FS numbered roads are sometimes quite problematic, and map road symbols do not offer a fine enough distinction. Two years ago in the Blue Mountains in Oregon, I found myself traversing mud bogs, down timber, and iffy creek crossings. Probably should have turned around, but persisted. Encountered a young woman in a low slung, sporty type car heading the way I had come who asked if the road beyond was passable. Well, it clearly was for me, with my relatively high clearance (though not 4wd), as I had just done so, but 7 miles had taken me four hours. I described what I had been through, and mentioned that there was no cell phone service and that she was alone, and directly advised her not to go there in that car. She did not, and in fact asked if I would maintain her in sight on the way out, which I did. Two miles later, but on mostly solid footing two track, we reached a good county road as shown on the map. The road I had followed was depicted identically to other FS roads in the vicinity that were all on ridge tops, solid, and reasonably wide. The difference was that this one was in the creek bottom while the others were mostly on ridges.

For me, I just take what stuff the van can handle. I don't need a ton of stuff, but then there are only two of us traveling.
