Hi harry,

All our trips now are on logging roads on Vancouver island. Height fof summer reduces the chances of encountering logging trucks ( very often logging suspended due to fire risk) but one keeps aware of any signs indicating active logging. It is a thrill to encounter a full load coming the other way on one of the main logging roads, dusty summer. But you get that.

I’ve encountered tacomas and jeeps with off road trailers even on the narrower spurs. They are great rigs if you don’t have a westy. I do appreciate the nimbleness of the westy on narrow spurs, ones that are narrow enough to remind you of Austin powers three point turns if you find out the road ends or washed out.

Same thing of you had a full sized pick up truck, your not going to turn around easily. The vanagon excels in my opinion as the small nimble camper. But if things were different and I had an off road and small trailer, I would hesitate to do the same trips as I do in the van.

I keep referring to off road trailers. By that I mean large wheeled and lightweight. Sort of an evolved army jeep trailer.

I would not use one of those small wheeled tent trailers without a bit of convincing. Mostly because if the wheel size.

If you have a trailer I’d say go for it. Have fun. Keep the trailer as light as possible. Worst case is detaching trailer and diddling around to turn around etc. I think that’s all part of the fun of the outing. Maybe I’m crazy :-)
