Hi Dave,

Wow! Thanks for this great write up. Reminds me of the need to consider the unexpected consequences of changes in suspension . I’m currently hoping my choices in upgrades result in positive improvement but not unexpected things.

My hight will not be changing but a new anti sway bar front and rear and updated bushings and linkages.

My van is a 85 and pretty darn tall. So I would not want to be any taller as I like being able to get in my garage. And with a 82.5 inch opening height I have a good inch or so clearance!

Keep the great info coming.

Before that I found an article on GoWesty about how raising the back can cause vibration when the CV bearings have worn a trace and the lift pulls them out of that trace (or at least that is how I understood the article). My mechanic and GoWesty are of two slightly different opinions: > > > * GoWesty says just replace the axels with new stock axels and everything will be fine. > * My mechanic agrees about the axels being the problem but says the stock axels will not be a reliable fix and either I need to use spacers with the stock axels (if such exists) or use 944 axels which handle the increased angle better than the stock axels. He also thought there was a slight chance they would break in and the vibration will slowly go away, or more likely they will just break as the CV joint comes apart. I should have some banging noise as a warning before they break completely. > > The other issue is he cannot get to it for a month this being prime season for camping. So, I am going to (1) research 944 axels vs stock on a lifted Vanagon, and (2) drive it until either it gets better, it breaks, or I get them replaced. I am also mulling replacing the axels myself. I have the tools (except the unique one for the bolts) but have never done it before. > > Your comments are, as always, appreciated. > > Dave B > Boise > ________________________________ > From: Roger Whittaker <rogerwhitt1@gmail.com> > Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2020 6:42 PM > To: David Boan <dboan@outlook.com> > Cc: Vanagon <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> > Subject: Re: Vibration > > dear good vibrations > > the lift would absolutely be a place to look - > Somehow i missed that crucial info as i read the initial posting - > CV joints are a Interesting critter and from what i can ascertain - from a non mechanics point of view - they are created to be specific to application > > On Tue, Jul 21, 2020 at 7:48 PM David Boan <dboan@outlook.com<mailto:dboan@outlook.com>> wrote: > It is a 2wd. > > I have been reading Samba posts about vibration, and another suspect is the CV joints. Perhaps raising the back 1.5" is behind this? It actually raised a bit more because the old springs were sagging. > ________________________________ > From: Alistair Bell <albell@shaw.ca<mailto:albell@shaw.ca>> > Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2020 10:34 PM > To: David Boan <dboan@outlook.com<mailto:dboan@outlook.com>> > Cc: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com<mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com<mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com>> > Subject: Re: Vibration > > This ain’t a Syncro is it? > > Alistair > >> On Jul 21, 2020, at 4:19 PM, David Boan <dboan@outlook.com<mailto:dboan@outlook.com>> wrote: >> >> Dear Van Types >> >> I just had some suspension work done that included upper control arm bushings, new shocks, 1.5" lift springs in the rear only, and an alignment (front and rear). The shop that did the work is experienced with tires and suspensions and Vanagons. After the work I had a vibration that starts at about 35 mph and stops about 45 mph. I feel the vibration in the steering wheel and shift lever. At 30 mph and 60 mph it is quite smooth. I went back to the shop and they tightened everything they had worked on. A lower bolt on the front right shock was very loose, but they did not see anything else. I drove home and the vibration continued. >> >> I am going back to the shop tomorrow and looking for a few ideas to suggest since they already said they did not see anything. For example, should both the upper and lower control arm bushings be done at the same time? Could they have knocked a balance weight off one of the wheels?
