Hmmm. Those helicopters seem small (to me) for heavy lift. I was involved with machining helicopter engines, mostly military. I would have suspected something more like a Huey. Interesting.As far as old growth forest, there is no doubt they are disappearing, It is a shame. Old growth forest is pretty amazing. On our 2nd trip across country, we spent some time camping among the California Redwoods. Pretty awe inspiring.

It’s a funny thing, a conflicted thing I guess, about my enjoyment of exploring the logged areas. The roads allow us to get to some spectacular places, and views. But very much much of the old growth is gone. Now the old growth limited to parks, eco reserves, and areas in the north part fo the island. Mind you, above a certain elevation it’s still old growth, but not big trees that we think of when we say old growth. That elevation thing, bit of a controversy as I think that old growth is counted in some of the surveys. Gives the wrong impression of things in my opinion.
Not saying the high elevation old growth is worthless, far from it, it’s beautiful and ecologically important. But it’s not big timber for big logging. I’ve seen some selective logging in higher areas, for yellow cedar, quite small cut blocks and helicopter to move log to access road. As a side note, one of the types of helicopters used here is the kamov ka32. ( Link to history page of vih http://www.vih.com/AboutVIH/history.html).
Kamovs still flying around here , Logging and flying over my house :-) ( I live near airport where vih based).

That's why it is so special and important to have you here Alistair. Not to mention you're knowledgeable. Your outlook has probably formed somewhat differently then us lower 48 folks. Still the bonding power is our love and respect for the (sometimes) magnificent vehicles we maintain. I'm glad of not only you, but the other Canadian members on the list. Diversity and different perspectives is a great thing.
