This is what I did. I installed the tent with top on so chose a cold time of year to do so. This made it nearly impossible to punch the staples through. Heat gun on low setting really helped soften the plastic but too much heat would cause the plastic to malform. In hindsight, I'd use a strip of wood in lieu of the OE plastic. ...... assuming that's feasible.
