Many, Many years smart ass. Never ever had this problem. We have ALWAYS been supplied the same Bosch Starter, a 025 911 023AX, SR 401X, from our supplier and have NEVER had this problem. It is the only starter they offer for the Vanagon with manual transmission. AND like I said, the longer starter and the shorter starter both have EXACTLY the same part number. So how do you order a starter for a Syncro when there is no specific part number for that part ????? ETKA shows the same starter for both 2WD and Syncro, 025 911 023AX. So where do you get this information that the Syncro starter is a different part from the 2wd starter ?
