Hmm.... right. Crank seal. But not expensive IIRC. image of 1981 Vanagon diesel:

And, the timing belt gear at crank may not react well to any significant heat. On my Mk3 gas inline 4, that cog looks like its made of some kind of pot steel. Or aluminum?
