Thanks for the tips. It turned out to be fairly simple. Once I got to the idle control valve, I saw that the small boot over the connector was torn nearly off and it was caked with dirt and grease. I cleaned it, repaired the boot, cleaned the other related connectors and presto, problem solved. I still need to test it after a full warmup but based on a simple test it is running better than it has for a while.

Does your 1985 engine use Digifant or Digijet? i.e. is it a 1.9 with Digifant?

On my 2.1 Digifant with PS no AC, I disconnected the idle valve, plugged appropriate air holes, turned idle screw on throttle body CCW, adjusted idle engine at that screw, engine warm. It idled, ran, ok after a brief warm up.

IIRC, I disconnected the idle control module in an attempt to eliminate it and related wiring as possible fault sources. Doing so may not be required if the only goal is to disable the idle control system.
