If that were not getting the correct voltage, would that account for the symptoms I described? ________________________________ From: David Beierl <dbeierl@gmail.com> Sent: Saturday, November 14, 2020 5:25 PM To: David Boan <dboan@outlook.com> Cc: vanagonlist a <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> Subject: Re: Idle Control

Under the AFM and under multiple hoses, just to the left of the spark plug is a unit bolted to the block near the water hose, which I read is to warm it up. There are two wires going to it.

That's the auxiliary air regulator. It contains a rotating-disk valve on a bimetal linkage that allows extra metered air to the engine when it's cold (metered meaning it's been tghrough the AFM). The effect is identical to opening the throttle slightly.

The regulator contains an electric heater that causes it to rotate fully closed shortly after engine start, and engine heat from the case will keep it closed for a while after engine shutdown.

The functions of the aux air regulator, solenoid idle valves and idle stab module are combined in the full-fledged idle control system (controller and variable air valve) on the 2.1l.
