Subject: Re: K&N air filters

K&N is a horrible thing to do to your engine if you drive in any amount of fine dust. It WILL pass through the filter and cause premature wear to the cylinders and rings. Anyone here running one: pull the intake boot off the throttle body and look inside - what do you see? These filters only offer a tiny amount of 'better' flow when clean, because the element pores are larger - which doesn't trap fine silt as well until...it begins clogging up! A quality paper filter far exceeds any advantage that the K&N claims to have. Is Jim Davis here? I recall a point in Death Valley Syncro Safari where he was experiencing running problems and had the air intake removed...you guessed it, there was a lot of dust inside the boot! The same applies to the ridiculous reusable cone filters many install on conversions, directly into the dust swirl of the engine compartment. Install a proper airbox w/ paper filter and snorkel to the top of the D pillar, the new engine will thank you. Karl
