in 30+ years of vanagon ownership I've seen only one vanagon with a Porsche engine. Not much details to give but it's a 1983 air cooled California Westy with a 2.2 air cooled Porsche engine, raised rear deck, vanagon OEM transmission. I almost bought it but my mechanic talked me out of it because the engine and the trans need rebuild and the interior was neglected/trashed. As for your question I'd think a Boxter engine may do well in the van, I've seen some ad for Boxter engine saying it's good for vanagon... good luck with your project... my estimate is it will be over US$20K when it's done...
