Subject: A/C ducts and rear unit fell off roof and severely damaged
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

The center ducts of my air-conditioning fell off the roof a long time ago.I still have them but they are damaged and I did not feel they could be reinstalled.I was fairly happy with the air blowing into the cabin from the rear.

Well about a year ago, I noticed the rear unit was hanging away from the roof by about an inch.At that point I should have had it taken down, but stupidly I didn't.So about a week ago the entire rear unit fell down with an almighty crash and was severly damaged. One end sheared off completely together with one rear speaker. And the speaker on the other side popped out. There were plastic shards everywhere. So now I have this huge heavy unit hanging down and resting on the cushion on top of the engine compartment lid. This means I cannot use the rear compartment and there is no way to open the engine lid.Obviously, I cannot live with this state of affairs for very long.

What to do? I don't know how the rear unit was attached to the roof or if can be reattached with its damage.I know there was a VW recall for this problem but I don't know what the fix was or if the parts could still be obtained. What are the chances of finding a good used a/c unit and the ducts?Vanagons seem non-existent in the local wrecking yards. -David, Tempe, AZ 1987 Wolfsburg GL
