My 84 Westy had the 1.9l motor, and I too chased the same issue for years! I also had a "no hot start" issue, which my "master mechanic" was never able to solve.

As it turns out, after reading a few things... the motor's valve were out of adjustment. Before going any further, I'd recommend making sure the valves are properly adjusted.

Hello Vanagon Types

For two months now I have been working on the idle stall issue with my '85 Westy, and I think I am closing in on the cause. The problem is the engine not idling after running at high throttle. It otherwise idles great and runs great. Timing is right on. After running at 2500 rpm or more and then stopping, the idle bounces around and then eventually stalls. Turning it off and back on eliminates the problem for the moment.

Following the idle switch testing procedure posted by Ken at VanAgain, I found a problem with the low throttle switch. With the engine off, I get clear clicks at full throttle but none at low throttle. Adjusting the switch did not change it.

The next step would be checking resistance at the switch, and that is where I have a question. My setup does not look like the sketch in Bentley, and I am unclear where to connect my multimeter. Does anyone know if the switches are under the throttle body and if I need to remove the throttle body to get to them? Or, if there is a connector I can use instead of removing the throttle body? I see several candidate connectors and not sure which is the one I want.

On the other hand, if there are no clicks, does that definitely mean a bad switch that should be replaced?

This engine is a GoWesty 2.3 on a 1.9 system.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Dave B Boise
