That's sound advice if you are in business buying from a supplier. Or if you aren't in business and you are lucky enough to know someone who can consolidate a shipment for you. I buy a lot of parts from suppliers in China and I'll often instruct them to pack heavier items like drip trays or keg lids inside of boxes of plastic thumb valves. But buying 50 drip trays and 4000 plastic thumb valves at once helps a lot.
It's tough for an individual to bring something into the US or Canada and often it's cheaper for an individual to buy retail on this side of the ocean.

My advice is always the same: Buy as much as you can afford at one time.
If you have a large box, most of it is empty space with one large part inside. If you can fill up that space with smaller items that aren't heavy, you are spreading out the cost. Even if it is something like T shirts, or stickers that you can sell or give away to others, it is accomplishing more than just buying one large item and nothing else. Avoid tunnel vision. You will need other items in the future, think ahead as much as you can and it will save you time and money.
