There is not much pressure driving flow of fuel into the pump (it's easier to blow than to suck...), so the conventional wisdom seems to be to use a very coarse pre-filter, if anything. Good write-up here:

FWIW, I've been having some hesitation on acceleration, and after eliminating most other possibilities, my current best guess is that it's a fuel supply issue. Planning on replacing pre- and post-filters, and my dented fuel tank in the next couple of months...will report.

Like Neil, I've also experienced contamination due to a failed seal on my expansion tank. There is definitely some stuff in my pre-filter I wouldn't want to go in my pump.

Bonus AAGH! of the day: Discovered yesterday my CV boots contained a lot of water, likely from getting stuck in a stream in August. Trial by, uh, water, for Red LIne CV-2!
