All good points Joe. And, your encouragement about moving forward with Subie conversion was one of the main reasons I did that. I am thinking you are Joe; from Colorado. Am I correct? You disclosed that you are a moderator on Denver Vanagons FB, so I think so. BTW....we have a healthy contingent of Vanagon Owners here in San Diego. We camp, we do meetups, we share ideas about fixes and improvements. It's pretty fun! Lots of expert advice. And some great food when camping.

The VOG on Facebook has one thing that I love: optimism. You get a lot of
new owners who are just learning their way around their vans and aren't
jaded yet. :)
People are supportive when another member learns where the brake master
cylinder is, or how to fill the washer fluid. They don't get skewered like
they do on Samba. Also, lots of good pictures.
However, to echo a point made earlier, too many people try to be funny or
bring attention to themselves, and when bad information is given then
questioned by more knowledgeable members, arguments break out and the whole
thing descends into madness.
I prefer the post-grad technical vibe of the Samba, the supportive and
personal camaraderie of the Vanagon List, and the enthusiasm of the VOG. So
I follow all three.
I love the Trip Reports on Samba. They inspire and motivate me to keep my
van on the road.
(Disclosure: I moderate the Denver Vanagons group on Facebook. We use it
mainly to swap parts and plan meetups. It's a great group of folks
that continues to grow.)
Cheers,
Joe T.
