Subject: Brake Adjustment
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi Vanagon Types

I have rebuilt my rear brakes for the first time and now adjusting them for the first time (I have done other vehicles). I followed the guidance to adjust the pads out until the drum will barely fit then back off 3-5 clicks, and to ignore any dragging on the drum as temporary. I have not driven it yet, other than backing in and out of the garage, but I notice pulling into the garage I could hear the brake dragging. Do I ignore this and allow time for the brakes to settle, or better to adjust it out a few more clicks. The brakes are still a bit soft, so I am inclined to leave them for now.

On a related note on the soft pedal, I bled all four brakes and installed steel flexible lines on all four. The front pads are getting thin though not yet at the point of needing replacement, but might replacing the front pads help stiffen the brakes?

Thanks list, Dave B. Boise '85 Westy
