OK,

Answer is the electrical part of the ignition switch was cracked. So sometimes the button moved to the side. That is what was explained to me.

We had to do some interesting things to get it out.

We first drilled a small hole to get out the mechanical switch. That was done to see if the mechanical switch was the problem. But it was working fine.

We then had to remove the two bolts with the snapped off tops and get into the steering column. Then luckily find my spare ignition switch. After that re assembly.

When I say we I mean I held tools and found requested items.

So exactly what magic was done might be a little beyond my description.

My friend also had a spare steering column from a 1980 van but I’m pretty sure we didn’t end up using any parts from it. But I now have a spare column with headlight and signal arms so that is a nice thing.

But, I’m going to get another spare ignition switch to have on hand. 40 years from now I might need it. So from that crazy description, who gets to claim the deduction?
