I got my emergency flashers working again just by activating the switch back and forth numerous times, the contacts were likely slightly corroded or dirty. Very similar to Richard's suggestion but without the spray. Driving one of these vans - you definitely want to have working flashers. I usually test them once a month. I am thinking this may be the same solution for the rear defroster.
