Thanks for explaining!

I have a ammeter shunt on my house battery. Months ago I got into a discussion with a longtime aviation electronics buddy who now uses hall effect devices to sense current, and I'd like to switch to that, but I want to sense lots of current paths and log the data, just out of curiosity.

So I started thinking about designing a module based around a hall effect device, so I can stick a bunch of them in various places in the wiring. But I haven't done any actual work on that yet.

By the way, for measuring large currents, by aviation buddy takes an interesting approach: He inserts a relatively short stretch of two parallel wires, one to carry the bulk of the current, and a smaller parallel wire which ends up carrying a fraction of the current, determined on the ratio of the wires' cross sections. He runs the smaller wire through the coil of an integrated hall effect module and calibrates the reading in software. He's using that technique with good success. I want to experiment with that, but, again, I haven't actually started.

Here's house battery/ammeter shunt installation, changed little since I did it ten years ago. My wiring isn't as neat as Karl's!
