Often the plastic version has a metal reinforcement for the 3 bolt flange. To add to the confusion the release bearings now often have a nylon sleeve inside. That over the metal tube works best. The input shaft is supported by a splined coupling at the main shaft and the pilot bearing. In the bell housing there is the seal and a flanged oil slinger. The bell housing needs to be removed and it helps to drop the diff to service-check that coupling. There is a screw holding the shaft from falling out but the splined coupling sleeve is what transfers the power. The is a snap ring that holds the sleeve. There should be just a bit of play in the coupling to take angular misalignment for the input shaft. Hope this helps. >> >> Dennis >> >> >> -----Original Message----- >> From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of Alistair Bell >> Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2021 3:56 PM >> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >> Subject: Syncro trans input shaft guide sleeve >> >> Hi, >> >> I’m a bit confused :-) >> >> Bentley shows a two part assembly , metal guide sleeve and plastic one.
